5th Annual Prints & Pots
Featuring the Maine Aomori Printmaking Society (MAPS) 2017 Print Exchange & Ceramicist Andy Hampton
September 30th - October 29th, 2017
This year for our 5th Annual Prints & Pots, Chases will exhibit a collection of prints by artists from the Maine Aomori Printmaking Society, as well as ceramics created with Japanese-inspired techniques from New Hampshire artist, Andy Hampton.
The traveling printmaking exhibition is part of MAPS (Maine-Aomori Printmaking Society), organized by Friends of Aomori as a cultural exchange program, sharing art and artists between the sister states of Maine and Aomori. The prints have been exhibited throughout Maine this year and will be exhibited here in York September and October. Simultaneously, the same collection has been exhibited this year throughout Japan in Aomori City, Fujisaki, and Tsugaru in Aomori prefecture.
This 2017 series of exhibitions throughout Maine and Aomori builds on the successful exchange and exhibition held last year at the Aomori Municipal Art Pavilion and at Space Gallery in Portland. Coinciding with the 2016 exhibition, Pickwick Independent Press -- an independent print studio located above the galleries in the Space Studios -- hosted Japanese printmakers for a week-long printmaking residency in Portland. The residencies were supported by a grant from the Consulate-General of Japan in Boston, and included time for the artists to work in the studio, visit local galleries and museums, and deliver a workshop at Maine College of Art. The group was led by Jiro Ono, Director of the Munakata Shiko Memorial Museum in Aomori, who facilitates the print exchange in Japan. During this visit, some of the Japanese artists created images based on their time in Maine. An image of Portland Head Light by Reiko Kudoh is the signature image for the 2017 series of exhibitions.
MAPS is organized by Friends of Aomori, an all-volunteer non-profit that supports the Sister State relationship between Maine and Aomori, Japan. The relationship between Maine and Aomori has been in place for 20 years, but the fascinating connection between the two states goes back to a shipwreck in 1889 (read more here: http://maine-aomori.org/about/). In addition to MAPS, Friends of Aomori supports high-school exchange programs, educational events and programming about Japan, and economic development opportunities such as a
recent delegation visit of Maine fisherman and aquaculture business leaders to Aomori in October 2016.
MAPS 2017 features prints by: Siri Beckman, Holly Berry, Meghan Brady, Quincy Brimstein, Crystal Cawley, Toshiaki Ebina, Tetsuro Hyogo, Yuko Kaneko, Reiko Kudoh, Erin Leon, Harumi Maeno, Hiroko Miura, Masumi Miyamoto, Akihiro Muroya, Yoshihiki Oyama, Christopher Patch, Barbara Putnam, Kazuko Sukekawa, Andrea Sulzer, Hiroshi Terada, Yoshimasa Tsujii, and Jeff Woodbury.
In conjunction with the MAPS exhibition, the 5th Annual Prints & Pots will feature work from New Hampshire artist, Andy Hampton. In 1970 Hampton became apprentice of Richard Bennett of The Great Barrington Pottery in Housatonic, Massachusetts. While there, he learned Japanese techniques of production and firing and continues to be drawn to Japanese aesthetics in the shape and simplicity of his work. Currently, Hampton lives and works in Chichester, NH where he has his studio and gas kiln. To close the exhibit, Hampton will be teaching a two-day weekend demo workshop here at Chases covering the Japanese-inspired techniques he uses in his own work.
